In the literature Nathaniel Hawthorne writes from the 19th century he uses women as objects that men use whenever they need. After reading stories like Dr. Heidegger's Experiment and The Birthmark one would believe that characters like Lady Wycherly and Georgiana were brought to their own demise at the whims and needs of a man. Women in the 19th century were not valued and respected in the eyes of not only everyday men, but also as important characters in literature.
             As Hawthorne exemplifies in Dr. Heidegger's experiment women are associated with being promiscuous, foolish, vain, and flirtatious. This is proven when Hawthorne discusses Lady Wycherly as a "great beauty in her day; but, for a long while past, she had lived" (Hawthorne 1). This quote allows men to control the path that a women's life takes due to prior engagements that may have or have not taken place. If a woman chooses to be trash, or conservative that is a choice she and she alone can make. Women are capable of doing anything that any man could due during that time period, but were only remembered as being pieces of meat that men used and made a bad name for when they were done with. Lady Wycherly was worthy of attention during her days of beauty and desire, but once all of her looks left her men discarded her. It is reasonable to say that Lady Wycherly was never good enough to be treated with respect and honor. Men loved her until they pulled up their pants and got out of bed.
             Georgiana on the other hand was a woman that had a happy lifestyle. She had a husband that loved her and life that seemed to be perfect until one destructive day changed everything. Georgiana was full of self esteem until her husband pointed out that she had a minor imperfection. This set off a huge u-turn in the way this once self confident woman lived her life.
