Whenever the topic of abortion is brought up most people think all the way back to the trial of Roe vs. Wade. This was the trial that made it legal for women to have an abortion. As a member of the Catholic Church, we feel that abortion violates the 5th Commandment, Thall Shall Not Kill. But the laws now state that t a woman has a right to chose weather she want her baby or not. I am righting this because I believe that if I can get people to see the importance of this issue that they can try does something about it. The case of Roe vs. Wade started at the end of 1972 and ended in late January of the next year. The case had been filed by "Jane Roe;" unmarried women who wanted to safely and legally end her pregnancy. Siding with Roe, the Court struck down the Texas law. In its ruling, the Court recognized for the first time that the constitutional right to privacy is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.
Today an abortion is 10 times safer than childbirth. But that still doesn't make it right. By 1992, changes in the make-up of the Supreme Court led many to believe that it might overturn Roe when it decided a challenge to several Pennsylvania abortion restrictions. As you probably know that case was unsuccessful and many people who were involved in that case are still fighting hard to stop abortion. As pro-life groups are getting larger and larger.
There are over 40,000 abortions a year in the U.S. and there have been millions done world wide. In a recent poll at Cnet.com it showed that 74% people would like to have the law changed. 25% of the people like it the way it was and the other 1% didn't care. 5,643 participated in this poll.
