             The forth chapter explores gay academic research on roles available to those who do not conform to gender stereotypes in non-western of pre industrialized societies.              Chapter five takes a look at autobiographies of transsexuals and transgender activists several years after the early autobiographies. The author evaluates what changes have taken place since that time. Further literary works such as Leslie Feinberg's novel Stone Butch Blues are used to examine the new connections that transsexuals are making with gay and lesbian communities.
             In chapter six Califia attempts to give the reader an understanding of the concepts of how differently gendered peoples relations to allies, lovers, spouses, and families has changed over time. Starting with the general public's awareness of transsexuals and how any romantic of sexual connection with a transsexual seemed freakish. As time went by it medical science aimed to turn transsexuals into 'normal' heterosexual men and woman. This helped to accept the partners of transsexuals as normal and the transsexual identity could be erased or nullified by marriage.
