The Making of a Great Designer

             Designers are unique individuals who dress the world. Tommy Hilfiger has become a top designer because of his drive and desire.
             Tommy Hilfiger was raised in Elmira, New York, a small town near Cornell University. He was the second child of nine in large Irish Catholic family. Hilfiger didn't enroll in college, but opted instead to go into the retail business at the age of 18. He opened a store called the People's Place in the upstate area and filled it with bell-bottoms that he bought in New York City. His stores grew, but he didn't watch the business carefully, when he was 25,Tommy Hilfiger filed for bankruptcy (Stegemeyer 144). The near failure ended up teaching him some valuable lessons, he says (Stegemeyer 144).
             While the business was recovering, Hilfiger started designing clothes for his remaining stores. When he was 28, he sold off the last of the upstate stores and moved to New York City with his wife, Susie, to pursue a career in the designing manufacturing business. "Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis both offered me jobs as design assistants, but at the same time I meet Mohan Murjani, who owned Gloria Vanderbilt," Tommy says (Homearts 1). "He asked if I would want to be backed, and we would created my company" (Homearts 1). When Murjani's business bottomed out, Hilfiger bought back his company with the help of two partners. A year and half later, the partners took the company public and used the money to expand the label.
             Hilfiger built his brand of clothing around his attitude and lifestyles of clothing. Everyone from the East Coast yuppies to L.A. rap stars have embraced the Tommy logo. Tommy preppie designs are popular with the urban kids of all races. Hilfiger's showroom is built on causal lifestyle very upbeat and healthy.
