During my studies of History at Saint Vincent College I have learned that a generation can be defined by its works of art and can be used to help explain questions not so easily answered by looking inside of historical textbooks. The one question that I intend to answer using forms of art such as, literature, poetry, and music is: What caused the 1960's to become a defiant and revolutionary time in America? In order to answer this question I have begun looking at the art works of the late 1940's and 1950's, from artists such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Gary Snyder, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gilliespe, Bob Dylan, and other members of the Beat Generation. In order to examine all these artists and their expressions and view it would take me up to three months of research.
             However, to really be able to study these works in the depth that my research will require, I would need to have them conveniently accessible in my home, due to my lack of time and lack of transportation. In addition to having access to literature and poetry texts, I will also require the music that I theorized inspired a generation of rebellion against the conventions of American society.
             By researching these revolutionaries I hope that I may be able to predict the next generation that will react against and, with their own original set of ideas, distinguish themselves from the current cultural majority and determine the nature of the spokespeople who will change the thought processes of the next generations. With this power I hope that we can also avoid the violence and chaos that evolved from a clash of generations and ideals, like Kent State and the race riots that plagued the United States in the 1950's and 1960's.
