State's polluted water endangers our future!
Georgia has enjoyed a long history of plentiful water. However, since Georgia has achieved this success we have lived in total ignorance of the problems that our behavior has caused to the environment. Now more than ever, our water supply is suffering from problems. It is no longer safe to believe that the water that we are drinking is safe. Georgia reports that 10 percent of our states water failed federal testing standards. What does this finding mean for you and I? The results indicate that the water in our state of Georgia failed federal standards for fishing and swimming. Georgia is faced with a job to make strides to improve water protection. The area of Georgia that is most at risk is the coastal parts of the state. Studies also indicate the fish recovered in these coastal areas were underdeveloped and some were died. Even though Georgia has not had any major fish problems. The state does have many problems. Georgia has 85 fishing advisories.
The question that we as a state must ask ourselves is what is more important-short term enjoyment or a lifetime of pain and problems because of our water problems. The major concern of state officials is whether or not economic development will suffer at the hands of environmental laws and standards. States such as Oregon and Massachusetts have high environmental standards and they still enjoy economic success. However, on the other hand, states like Louisiana that have relaxed environmental laws have suffered economic, environmental, and health problems. Moreover, in order for the future of Georgia to be a safe one for our drinking water, we must start now to improve it.
