Seminar on Freedom of Expression in Canada
             In response to the hard work that our group put into the seminar, I think everything worked out fine. We were well organized, separating each section into clear parts, enabling us to present the different aspects of freedom of expression properly. I am glad we worked well as a team and I am looking forward to our case presentation.
             With regard to our presentation topic, I had never realized to which extent the Canadian charter dedicates a large amount of space to Canadians' rights and freedoms of expression. In my past experiences, the charter was mainly consulted to analyze the charter's policy with regard to matters such as racial segregation. That is why I was indeed surprised to find so much information about Canadians' rights and freedoms of expression in different books and on the Internet, as well.
             Precisely, with regard to Canadians' freedoms and rights of expression, section 2 (b) of the charter states: "Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: ... freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication." The section potentially could cover a wide range of action, from commercial expression to political expression; from journalistic privilege to hate speech to pornography.
             As well, there are many advantages associated with Canadians' rights and freedoms of speech. Primarily the maintenance of a system of free expression is necessary in order to assure individual self-fulfillment. Which means that each and every Canadian is allowed to speak his or her own mind with regard to controversial topics, debates in society, political stands and personal opinions. Freedom of expression in Canada can also be seen as a means of attaining the truth.
