It's peculiar to see how society traps limits and destroys innocent people. It's as if man is born to be a follower rather than a leader. The novel The Metamorphosis written by Franz Kafka and the play The Glass Menagerie written by Tennessee Williams are two examples of this statement. Both main characters, Gregor and Laura live in hostile environments where they are judged because they are unique.
             In the novel The Metamorphosis the character who stands out is Gregor. This ironic thing about this novel is that Gregor lives most of his life like a bug and, one morning he wakes up and is human size bug. He doesn't know what to do. He decides that the best thing to do for now is to stay in his room until he figures out what he will say when his parents see him. After Gregor's transformation into an insect, his entire family rejects him.
             In the play The Glass Menagerie, the daughter Laura is an outcast. She is sick; Laura is crippled, and walks with a limp and a brace. Laura chooses to live her life in a rare manner, she lives on memories and illusions of the past. An example would be her glass collectables she plays with. During the course of the play, the glass unicorn gets broken, symbolizing the fragile nature of a dream world.
             Laura can relate to the unicorn in the way that they both stand out. She lives her life each day pretending that her father is still there.
             The stories are similar in that, the characters who are rejected from society because, and they're individuals. Gregor because of the way he lives life in a routine and is treated and Laura because of how she lives life on memories. Society is cruel in the way that it treats people who are different, regardless if they choose to be that way or not, like outcasts.
