Television and the 1950s

s. Betty Furness-the lady from Westinghouse-became the first symbol of the American kitchen and appliances. She was an actress on the Studio One set who was asked to do a commercial for their sole sponsor Westinghouse. In the beginning she was to do three live commercials a week, but things changed when businessmen learned the powers of television. Men liked her looks, but more important, women, the prime targets of these commercials!
             , liked her too. She came across very much like the woman portrayed in photos and ads in woman's magazines-bright, upbeat, and confident, and modern without looking too glamorous. She was the all-American wife in the all-American kitchen (Halberstam: The 1950s). Westinghouse portrayed the kitchen as a great haven in attempts to get women back in the house after World War II.
