The story I chose to write my assignment on is the "Quilt" by Tayama Katai. There were a couple of reasons for me to write about this wonderful short story. One of them was that I could not get a hold of the other 2 books anywhere. The other more important reason was that I felt connected to the theme of the story. As humans, we all must have the feeling of being an angel or a devil or somewhere in between. To choose one or the other was a very tough decision. The story tried to put Takio sensei as being in love with Yoshiko and the story develops on how he was torn apart between being the devil or being her guardian angel in her love affair. But this love for Yoshiko wasn't true love, but instead it was lust. There is a very thin line between love and lust and most of us believed that we were in love with someone, but truthfully we were in lust with that other person. Sometimes, it's very difficult for a person to know the difference once they have been put in a sit!
uation similar to Takio sensei, but rest assured it was lust that Takio sensei was feeling.
One might ask what is the difference between love and lust? Where is the line from being in love with the person to lust with the person? I cannot answer you for sure, but I can prove to you that Takio sensei was lusting for Yoshiko san. From the beginning of the story, I felt that Yoshiko san was not interested in Takio sensei even though he tries to persuade the audience that she was. "And yet, Tokio himself believed that there had been two occasion in the last year when such an opportunity had at last come close. One had been when Yoshiko had send him a lengthy letter tearfully stating her belief that she was incompetent and unable to repay his kindness as her teacher, and that therefore it would be better for her to go back home, become a farmer's wife, and lose herself in the oblivion of the countryside (Katai pg 58)."
