Soccer is one of the most rapidly growing sports in the United States and probably the most renowned sport all over the world. Nobody knows why it was never a popular sport here in America but generally Americans preferred football or baseball. That dramatically changed when the biggest soccer tournament in the world, World Cup, came to our backyard.
Soccer originated in England, so they have been dominating over the years. United States has never had a good enough team to compete with other countries. In 1994 Americans were privileged to see all the best soccer teams in the world come show off their talents. This tournament is so big that it only happens every four years. The tournament produced more goals than the previous one in Italy 1990. There were games shown every day on national television. I believe that this tournament was the key to popularize soccer in America.
The United States team qualified to move to the second round for the first time in team history. Their key win was against Columbia. That is a great example how popular soccer is around the world. The first game in the next round they played Brazil, a heavy favorite, and lost one to nothing. It was a evenly matched game. Brazil would eventually go on to win the World Cup that year. This sparked hope in every American. The United States team proved that they are at the same level as the rest of the competition and they did it on home turf so every American could see. Shortly after the tournament the Untied States formed Major League Soccer, the first professional soccer league in America.
Bringing the World Cup to America proved to be a great success. The United States team is no longer taken for a joke. Today I see more and more people interested in play
