From the beginning of the world women were always considered to be inferior to men. Especially when it comes to the field of literature. So far it has been a male dominated field. Times have changed but there are still some controversy surrounding female writers and poets. From reading Adrienne Rich's essay titled "When We Dead Awaken: Writing as Re-vision" I found that women are being discriminated against and thus being prevented to develop their writings. To this day I believe gender is the one thing that holds back the female population from being artistic and expressing themselves freely through their writings.
             In the essay Adrienne Rich tells us that because she was a normal housewife in the 1950's her writing was very limited. She also says that even when she started writing she wrote to please her father, "or rather, not to displease him."(Page 553) This shows how bad she was being held back from freely expressing herself. Not only she blames the gender issue she also blames the time she was living in. At that time of the decade I believe there was no freedom for women. They had to walk in the shadows of the male writers so they could please them and not criticize or discriminate their work.
             If a woman were to have an opinion of her own without the permission of the male population at that time she was known as a rebel. And I think this is still prevalent today in the modern age. The women are being considered as the toys of the male population. And because of this Rich says they were writing out of anger not because of the passion that they had inside of them.
             Even though it is not that common today I think women are still discriminated on their writing because of their gender. Even today, women are known to please the male dominated field of writing. With writing what they feel and don't worry about the opposition the women are break
