Franklin Delano Roosevelt was considered to be the greatest president by many American people. He had done so many great things while being in office. One of his great achievements was the new deal. In 1933 the new president, Franklin Roosevelt, brought an air of confidence and optimism to the people during that time. The New Deal merely introduced types of social and economic reform familiar to many Europeans for more than a generation. The New Deal represented the culmination of a long-range trend toward getting rid of capitalism. The first task was to offer help to the unemployed. The next task was the recovery of business and farming so that all people would be able to get jobs. The third issue was the most important, to make sure that the economy will never collapse again. One of the major New Deal accomplishments in 1935 was the Social Security Act. It provided income for the old and retired people.
             While on a summer vacation in 1921 Roosevelt became crippled by the disease polio. Because of the disease he lost the full usage of both his legs, but overcame him limitations and became the only president to be elected four consecutive terms. He stated handicaps exists only in our minds. He fooled everyone, nobody knew about his disease. Even while having a severe case of polio he was able to do a great job as president.
             In 1941 Roosevelt became the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and leader for America and its allies during World War II. He created the great alliance against the Axis powers now known as the United Nations.
             In his fourth term as President, Roosevelt died of a stroke on April 12, 1945. He never saw the end of World War II on September 2, 1945, although he was chiefly responsible for leading the United States and its allies to victory.
             Franklin D. Roosevelt was a great president, possibly the greatest of the 20th century.
