             At the age of fourteen Slow contemplated whether to go with the war party or stay back. He decided to go, two days before the departure of the warriors, they had been humming with excitement (Vestal 8).
             Slow did not notify his family, not even his mother that he had decided to go with the war party. "And of course it was not part of a man to consult a woman about war!" (Vestal 9)
             When Slow reached the war party one being his father, Slow felt a silent disapproval at his uninvited presence. At this point he felt that his only friend was his pony. Slow was naked except for his moccasins, breechcloth, and beads. Slow had painted his whole body in a bright yellow color and he was riding his pony which he had painted red for war. And in his hand he was holding his coup-stick that was given to him by his father (O'Connor 10-12).

             Slow was the very first to count coup during this war party. Coup was the touching or striking the enemy alive or dead. Slow did not kill his enemy he simply knocked him off his horse.
