(To help solve the issue of violent acts in schools)
Every year the news if filled with stories about school shootings and other violent acts that have occurred in schools. Society constantly hears about school bomb threats and rumors about possible school shootings. However, nothing is more terrifying when one of those violent acts takes place in one's hometown, for instance, the Littleton, Colorado shooting spree. In a study about violent crimes against teenagers twelve percent took place in school and twenty-one percent occurred on school property (Foster-1994 67). This means an approximate average number of crimes in school or school property is 500, 000 crimes a year (Foster-1994 68). These statistics suggest that in an average 180 day school year an approximate 2, 700 violent acts occur in a day.
The number of school related violent acts, in general, need to be decreased. However, one of the most devastating and increasing crimes that are occurring are school shootings. School shootings are the most violent because one particular life is not threatened, but everyone present in school that day is threatened as well. School shootings are usually not previously announced and therefore are often hard to stop. Many reasons may encourage students to bring a gun to school and often times there is no single cause to school shootings. For instance, a shooter may decide to pull out a gun if they hate their teacher or because they did not like the person sitting next to them. Take the Littleton shooting massacre for example, the students which opened gun fire in school felt like outcasts and planned against killing all those which they hated. School shootings have increased rapidly throughout the year and have continuously grown.
