Persuasive Papers

             In the text, A World of Ideas, Freud and Horney each exercise differing styles in presenting their arguments. Freud's essay dealing with his theory of dream fulfillment being the driving factor behind dreams; while Horney's essay takes on the topic of distrust between the sexes. Both styles, although differing, they both provide solid information and make a case behind their respective arguments. To separate and break down which essay best goes about in the most convincing fashion one must look at their styles in writing, their examples cited in their work, and the author's background information.
             To begin the pair's writing styles contrast on several levels. Horney goes into great depth and length in her essay almost to the point of overkill with the excessive citing of cultural and historical examples of distrust. In comparison Freud's work is drastically shorter and less wordy, as Freud stays more on hand and cites his examples more evenly spaced throughout his argument. The examples themselves also shed light on the differing styles, as Horney cites historical and cultural examples in comparison to Freud's method of personal examples. The final distinction in their writing is that Horney seems to be more on the aggressive end in presenting her point. The topic provides for a more lively conversation so naturally it brings out a little extra attitude into the work itself. In the end Freud's essay gives the more convincing argument due to his nature in presenting his argument in a calmer, less passionate manner. By Freud taking a more relaxed stance on his position it makes him seem less partial to being on a particular side. Also he does not give readers the chance to make an argument as easily because he doesn't let his essay come off in a debatable fashion; choosing to put his argument into more of a story form.
