In The Awakening by Kate Chopin there are many things that can interest the reader. One key thing that was interesting was the title. The title is very important because it is what Edna experiences. Edna is the main character who has led a very sheltered life of always doing what is expected of her. She marries Leonce out of obligation to society not love. She has his children but the reader is led to believe there is never really that special bond between mother and children. Edna realizes all of this when she meets Robert; who she has an affair with. Robert falls in love with her as she falls in love with him and she is "awakened" to the fact she has not led the life she may have wanted. Edna becomes unmanageable; she does not obey her husband like women were assumed to do in that time period. In a scene outside their home Edna refuses to go to bed when her husband calls for her so Leonce joins her instead of arguing. When she is ready to go to bed she tells Leonce!
             but standing his ground he is now not ready; this was his way of letting her know he is still in charge. When her affair with Robert is put on hold due to his trip to Mexico she has a purely physical relationship with a lady's man named Alcee. Robert returns and they start where they had left off and then unexpectedly he leaves again. The reader may believe at this point that Edna has come to the conclusion it is not men or anyone else that make her happy; she has to be happy with her self and all her decisions. All this has "awakened" Edna and has led her to her tragic death.
