Characteristics of Beowulf and Grendel

             What is an Epic? An epic usually centers on a battle between good and evil. Obviously in the epic, Beowulf, the battle between good and evil is between Beowulf and Grendel. Grendel is the bad villain who was born as a monster into exile. He was cursed because he was conceived by a pair of monsters of Cain. All of Cain's decendents were punished by God. Beowulf, however came from a family who were strong soldiers like him. Higlac is Beowulf's feudal lord and uncle. His father was a famous soldier callled Edgetho.
             Beowulf and Grendel are both determined to be the best and overcome any obstacle that interferes in their way. Beowulf is a very brave person. When Beowulf heard about a monster terrorizing the hall in King Hrothgar's place and no man was able to defeat him. Beowulf decided to go and help on his own will. When he fought Grendel he used no weapons; he used his bare hands. Even when he was of age, he was ready to face anyone.
             Grendel may have been strong, but he wasnt brave at all, he was a coward. Grendel would only attack men during the night. He would would wait until the men were drunk and asleep and then kill them. No one knew how Grendel looked like, because he wouldn't let anyone see him. When Beowulf and Grendel were fighting, Grendel's first thought was to run away when he realized that Beowulf was just as strong or stronger than him.
             Whenever Grendel would hear musicand the sounds of happiness, he would be filled with anger and hatred. He would listen to Hrothgar's men talk about God's creation of the world and become even more angry. It would make him want to kill even more men. Grendel is also unfortunate. He was born into exile when he didn't do any wrong. He was raised to be evil, without giving the chance of being good.
