             known the many problems with America, Progressives gained popularity. With the
             release of publications such as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, which exposed the
             dangers of the meat-packing industry, Progressives gained support and were able
             to begin making a difference. The first Progressive leader was President Teddy
             Roosevelt. Following McKinley's death in 1901, Roosevelt began to remodel the
             way big business ruled America. Starting with the Anthracite Coal Strike in May
             1902, in which mine workers went on strike demanding an 8-hour work day and
             a 20% salary increase, Roosevelt began to regulate big business. When the mine
             owners refused to abide by workers' demands and the coal necessary to heat
             schools and homes was no longer being produced, Roosevelt threatened to send
             in federal troops to operate the mines, forcing mine owners to negotiate with the
