Change

Within every group, culture, or society a constant change is occurring. Every individual is evolving into something different, and because of this alteration within every individual the entire group undergoes a change. Each part of the overall unit pushes and pulls on the other independent parts; everyone and everything is intertwined. The author William Faulkner through his short story," A Rose For Emily, " addresses this issue. He uses his characters to address the dynamics of change within a certain society and more specifically the Deep South in the early 1900's. The author focuses his attention on three main characters, Miss Emily, the Negro manservant and the town.
Faulkner's, " A Rose For Emily," is about the story of a town struggling to move forward. At first glance the reader would see on e main character, Miss Emily's the anchor to the past, and the one who inhibits the town from change. But is she really the one holding them back? Many times she is set in her ways and refuses to budge on certain matters and at these times she is the one holding them back. But there are many other times when she is not the biggest opponent to change. Instead unknowingly it is the town itself which is restricting it's own growth. On the surface they preach that change is the key, but deep down inside the town's people want to hold onto the traditions, honor, and ways of their past. As the story progresses these two opposing forces are in a constant tug-of-war they push and pull on one another. When the Town is trying to move forward, Miss Emily is the one holding them back. When Miss Emily is willing to m9ve forward then the town does not t!
ake advantage. Instead they try and keep it the same way it has always been. On the outside they proclaim a need for change but on the inside they want to remain in their old ways.
