The book was of chivalry towards women and the Catholic Church. Iñigo's chivalrous intent began to focus on the Holy Mother. He began to wonder about living a life similar to that of the saints of old such as Saint Francis and Saint Dominic. In his autobiography, Iñigo states the influence of this and other writings inspired him to "keep a vigil of arms one whole night, without sitting or lying down, but standing a while and kneeling a while, before the altar of Our Lady of Montserrat, where he resolve to lay aside his garments and to don the armor of Christ."
             Upon recuperating sufficiently, he left his home in Loyola in March 1522 wanting to go to Jerusalem.
