Which do you Support, the Electoral College or Popular Vote?
One of this country's founders, James Madison, once said, "Measures are often decided, not according to the rules of justice and the rights of the minor party, but by the superior force of an interested and overbearing majority." This statement is a valid interpretation of this country's recent presidential election. It is no wonder, that in this country's current political environment people have been calling for the abandonment of the Constitution's Article II provisions for the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a system that is used to elect the president of the United States of America. The definition of the Electoral College as stated in the Constitution is "Each State shall appoint a number of Electors, equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress."
The Constitution's framers, who feared tyranny of the majority, formed the Electoral College. It's a unique American idea, whose ingenious design has allowed for the protection of the smallest voice, an invaluable check and balance created by men who understood from personal experiences that powerful people and governments have a tendency to brutally destroy those with less power. Without the Electoral College, huge population centers could dictate the rest of the country.
It is with this knowledge, that I whole-heartedly support the Electoral College, a device which is used to allow for all Americans to get what our founding fathers wished for us: a republic rather than a pure democracy. A pure democracy is nothing more than mob rule, a dictatorship by the majority which usually ends in the oppression of minorities.
