             >From the moment they are born, children possess an innate loyalty to their parents. When children are young, their whole world revolves around their family and loyalty to this familial unit, especially the parents, is unwavering. Take for instance children who have been emotionally abused by their parents. No matter what their parents say to them, the children will remain loyal, standing by them through any endeavor and doing almost anything for them. There are times, though, when this loyalty is tested, and in some instances, personal integrity triumphs. Children reach a point where they know the difference between right and wrong and will stand up for what they feel is right, even if that means breaking an unspoken bond between parent and child.
             In the story "Barn Burning" by William Faulkner, the bonds between parent and child are put to the ultimate test. From the first paragraph of the story, the reader can see that the child, Sarty, is torn between doing the right thing and being loyal to his father. Even though Sarty has not done anything wrong, he stands by his father, saying that his father's enemy is his enemy too. "Ourn! Mine and hisn both! He's my father!" Sarty thinks.
