I believe this represents the move from manpower (warm/feeling) to mechanical power (cold/unfeeling). With this transition comes loss of jobs and ultimately loss of lives because of the loss of jobs. And like the rat that gets cut in two, so it goes with man if he doesn't step forward into the machine age.
             "November Cotton Flower," a girl with the beauty of Karintha, is born out of the dismal conditions of the oppressed race. Does she bring hope or is it just a false hope that brings even greater oppression? I believe like the winter season or the destroying effects of the boll weevil, the oppression can only last awhile, a season. Even if it means passing on to our final destination with Jesus, there is hope of better days.
             "Becky" has an interracial affair and ultimately ends up with two "Negro sons." Both the white and the black communities then ostracize her. However, the white and black people both secretly feed and house her. I believe this shows how we control and hide the truth of the time. When we can't hide it any longer or we cannot stand to look it in the face anymore, we cover it up. Out of site, out of mind. I also believe the "true word" of Becky's story reveals the history of violence against women who dare cross the taboo line of racial boundaries. Her sons are confused and don't know what side they should join. They become angry and violent and reject both communities. This shows the deep segregation that lives in the hearts of both the white and black communities. This is just as prevalent today. People just keep it to themselves or discuss it secretly with those that are close to them.
