Girard does a considerable job of keeping his opinion out of his work yet it does show some sympathy for the Confederate cause. However his book does have some very valuable information because it is a first hand account of his view of the south.
Why the North Won the Civil War by David Donald is a collection of several authors essays dealing with why they think the south lost. The essays deal with everything from the military leadership of the both sides to political factors leading to Confederate defeat. All of them seem to have a great grasp of what they are talking about but fail to show neutrality, meaning you get a sense they are holding a grudge against the south even today. The best example I found was in the essay by David Potter about the Political Factors in the South's Defeat. In his essay he refers to the south as "natural losers" and the north as "natural winners"(p.91). He also goes on to say
