Friedrich Kekule

One 19th century chemist who made many discoveries and had many
accomplishments, which lead to the better of mankind, is Friedrich August Kekule. His
Benzene ring finding made him a pioneer in the world of chemistry, even though chemistry
was not very highly regarded in his day. Kekule's success can be attributed to long years
of hard work and perseverance. Friedrich August Kekule founded structural organic
chemistry and is best know for his "ring" formula for benzene. Although mostly known
for his benzene finding, Friedrich August Kekule had many other accomplishments leading
1847 Friedrich August Kekule was admitted to and attended the University of
Kekule attended the university with the intention of studying architecture. It was
here that he happened to enroll in a chemistry class under Justus von Liebig. This was a
major accomplishment due to the fact that in the mid -19th century it was uncommon for
students to enroll in a university to advance their studies in a particular field. Many men
during this era, in fact, only completed the elementary levels of education, let alone high
school and university levels. This could have been his biggest accomplishment for it was
the first real major step in his chemistry career. (Asimov, 1982)
1851 Friedrich August Kekule graduated from the University of Giessen.
After years of hard work and perseverance at the University of Giessen, Kekule
earned himself a degree and went on to Paris to take his studies one step further; to pursue
a doctorate. It was here that he learned the unitary theory of chemistry, the theory of
radicals and type theory. He also became interested in the problems of philosophy of
chemistry that would concern him all his life. (Gillis, 1973)
1852 A Doctorate of Chemistry was awarded to Kekule.
It was upon this accomplishment that Kekule went on to work in Switzerland,
             becoming an assistant to A...
