STATUS ON THE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM
The new program that was established this year involving the entire school in community service was a partial success.
This program mandatory for each grade consists of four different institutions where the students of Lahore American School are to help. These are namely SOS Childrens' Village, Citizens Foundation, Alif Laila, and National Center for Emotionally Handicapped Children. Three grades, one from each level of the school participates in helping a community. This new system has a grade from elementary, middle school, and high school working together on one project.
" This helped the different age groups to get to know each other as well as work well," says Brown.
This was the idea of the senior class of 2000 when they were asked or ideas to connect the entire school.
Every class had their own way of handling it before they actually went out to the community. Elizabeth Gribbon's fourth grade class started out with classroom talks before actually going out to the Center for Emotionally Handicapped Children. The Sixth graders had two students from the Global issues and Community Service class come to their homerooms and explain what the whole project was about.
While the Juniors and Sophomores went to the community they were involved in, the Seniors and Freshman failed to contribute any time to this program.
" We were supposed to work with the children from Citizen's Foundation school but nothing came of it," says Neelam Ihsan, the senior class president. The senior class was to make a trip to this school on Basant.
The Sophomores made a trip to the Alif Laila library with the 6th and 3rd Graders.
" We went to Alif Laila on the 21st April with the Elementary school students. We are going to donate a compressor for the air conditioner, a water cooler, and some books for the library" Says Farrukh Shafiq.
