A Gambling Fool

             "I'm a gambling fool"(Kesey 17), said Randal Patrick McMurphy. McMurphy is a man who has a free will. He never lets his guard down, McMurphy feels that people have a right to say and do what they want. Ken Kesey Portrayal of R.P.M as a "savior" in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, is that of a man who wants to help the patients of the ward take their manhood from the grips of Nurse Ratched.
             To show the men that they have a say in what goes on in the ward. R.P.M asks Nurse Ratched if he can watch the World Series on T.V. He is given the chance to change the time that they watch T.V., by having to get the majority of the vote in the word.
             Twenty-one! The chief's vote makes it twenty-one! And by god if that ain't a majority, I'll eat my hat! Yippee, Cheswick yells. The other Acutes are coming across towards me. The meeting was closed, she says. Her smile is still there, but the back of her neck, as she walks out of the day room and into the Nurse Station, is red and swelling like she'll blow apart any second.
             McMurphy in his efforts to give the men power, so they could regain their manhood, starts watching a blank screen and acts as if he is really watching the World Series. The men follow him and watch with him. By doing this he shows the men his "savior" like quality of a leader. McMurphys tactics are to aggravate nurse Ratched and to show the men his manly stubborn ways.
             However McMurphy struggle is far from over. R.P.M asks if he could brush his teeth, one morning and his request was denied.
             It's ward policy, Mr. McMurphy, tha's the reason, and when he sees that this last reason don't affect McMurphy like it should, he frowns at the shoulder and adds, what you s'pose it'd be like if everybody was to brush their teeth whenever they took the notion to brush.
