             "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me." These words welcomed millions of emigrants to the United States. To many these words spoke of hope of a better life and a better future. This land promised opportunity and a job. This land offered justice for all and freedom. This land offered a space for all a place to lay your head, raise a family and pass the land to the next generation. A land of equal opportunity. A land to practice your own religion of choice. A land free of oppressing governments and taxes, a land of choice. A land where you can vote for your leaders and representatives. A place where you have the freedom to walk down the street without having to worry about your safety or because you are of the wrong skin color, ethnicity, race, or height. A place where you can relax and put your feet up. A place where you won't have to !
             This was the dream and the hope that many millions of people had when they first arrived on Ellis Island. Little did they know that when you got to the island you had to go through a vigorous examination. The slightest thing wrong could put you back on a ship back home. Many families were torn apart by this. Little did they know that America the land of dreams, the land of milk and honey was not what they dreamed it to be. Many Irish emigrants were faced with serious racial discrimination. Many Italians had problems getting jobs. Have you ever stopped to think about how thankful you are for the subway, the railroad, or the highway? The subway, the railroad, and the highways are built by immigrants.
