Suviving Life: Out of Body Experiences

The mind acted in terms of final causes, or purposes, being led to make decisions on the basis of the attractiveness of ideals, whereas the matter of the body could be moved only by mechanistic impact (Griffen 105). The problem arises when one seeks to explain how two things that are totally unlike could causally interact with one another. This missing link between the two leads way to materialistic thought. It seems that to solve this problem, one would have to dismiss the theory of dualism altogether. David Hume notes that a human's mental life appears to be dependent on the proper functioning of the body (Rowe 513). If proven right, his theory completely destroys dualist thought and the belief in survival after bodily !
Still there have been attempts to provide the missing puzzle piece to Descartes' argument. Two of his followers, Geulincx and Malebranche, attempt to correct the problem by reasoning that all apparent interaction between the soul and body just requires a constant supernatural intervention of God (Griffen 105).
