There are various reasons why Los Angeles is a "perfect" city to show religious-based landscape changes as well as ways that buildings are being reused and changed. There have been many different responses to how the Christian Church has handled ethnic and societal changes.
Los Angeles is a good city to show examples of ethnicity and changes in society in regards to religion. The city has long been a place of desire to both immigrants and migrants. Los Angeles is in a central location for many people from around the world. It is a large city and is located on the coast making it an easy city to access. The changes are most noticeable in the city's metropolitan area's religious landscapes. Many people continue to migrate to Los Angeles to this day. The city had many early encounters with Asian people, but a boom was hit in the latter part of the 19th century when many people were seeking new locations for religious purposes. According to James Gregory, Los Angeles became a "Xanadu dimension" or a place that encouraged religious individuality and innovation. While society may appear to be secular, Los Angeles was not. The transformations that have taken place in landscape change are attributed to population dynamics as well as the "response to various religions and belief systems" from the various ethnic groups flocking to Los Angeles. Today, the city is home to people from over 140 different countries, all of whom have extremely diverse religious backgrounds.
