Charles Darwin

In 1859, Charles Darwin developed a theory explaining the history of our evolution. He also came up with the idea of Natural Selection. This is the idea that the environment an organism lives in helps to determine which organisms survive and produce young, and which do not.
When Darwin was a young man he traveled around the world on the H.M.S. Beagle (1831-1836), a research vessel. His job was to make observations on the plants and animals found in the places the ship docked. It has resulted in hard evidence that has answered questions of how we evolved and how we develop.
*Evolution is the gradual change of living things through time. *
Overproduction: Organisms produce more offspring than will ever survive just to assure that some organisms will survive.
Variation: Some organisms within a species are better equipped to survive than others due to variations in traits.
Natural Selection: Nature "selects" the best individuals to survive due to better traits that the organism has.
Survival of the fittest: The organism best adapted to their environment will be able to live on and produce offspring.
Evolution: A species will evolve as a result of the accumulation of variations (adaptations) and as a result of natural selection. This will lead to a species better equipped and adapted to their environment.
