Southern state legislatures dominated by former Confederates, passed laws known as black codes that severely limited the rights of blacks. These codes were different from state to state, but they usually contained limitations on black occupations and property-owning and laws under which blacks could be forced to work for whites if they were considered unemployed. In the southern United States, legal segregation in public facilities was current from the late 19th century into the 1950s. Such tactics were taken to limit segregation such as the Civil Rights movement, many cases brought forth to the Supreme Court and the Jim Crow laws.
