The question is what is social policy? Defining the words as two separate entities will begin to breakdown the meaning of the political term. Webster defines social as relating to human society, the interaction of the individual and group, or welfare of human beings of a society. Policy as Webster defines it, is a definite course of action selected from among alternatives in light of given conditions to guide and determine the present and future decisions. Combining these two terms would lead one to believe that social policy is the governing of the welfare of the individual and group of a society. The following essay is my personal opinion on what the term social policy implicates.
             As I examine my syllabus for this course, I notice that a number of the assignments have to do with social issues that deal with specific groups in a society. I surfed the Internet to find social policy issues in Australia, and came across the following article titles:
             Children 'dumped without Care' - Sydney Morning Herald (Jul 11, 2000)
             Birth rate falls as career and motherhood clash - Sydney Morning Herald (Jun 30, 2000)
             Care cost too rich for poor families - Sydney Morning Herald (Jun 19, 2000)
             These articles indicate that social policy is an attempt to solve serious social problems that effect many societies and is an extremely important area of political science. Because my political views tend to be moderate liberal, solutions to social issues such as the care for poor families, performed through government intervention would be tolerated. The
             issues of unwanted children, abortion, and birth rate declines are closely related problems that would be handled by the implementation of social policy.
             Once again social policy is the policy created to relegate a solution for social issues in an effort to impede the negative effects on a society. It is a policy that is extremely important for the welfare of a nation's
