Film as Art

ESSAY # 3: I am choosing to trace the career of either Julia Roberts or Robert DeNiro. I am having trouble deciding which actor, since they are both my utmost favorite. I plan on reassessing the role he/she plays over again and coming up with the answer of why they choose the roles they do. I have seen just about every movie each one of them have been in, but feel it is necessary to watch a few over to really get the feel of the characters being portrayed.
Both of these actors take on strong character roles in their movies. I will trace the development from their very first movies and how they either have maintained similar roles throughout the years or if they have strayed away from their "norm." I think movie goers have a premeditated idea of what each actor is going to be like in the movie. This is not only due to advertising, obviously, but from each actors film history. Let's take DeNiro for example. We, as critics, have grown accustomed to seeing him in gangster-type, tough guy roles. This is because he is terribly good at making the viewer belieive in his character. Julia Roberts is usually portrayed as a strong-willed woman and her movies are more romantic and funny, unlike Deniro's whose are more serious and action-packed.
My motive in choosing this topic is to prove why one of these actors takes on certain roles. Is it because he/she can relate because of something that has happened to them in their past? Is it because of the way they were brought up and the things they were exposed to while growing up? Or is it simply because they genuinely like playing the characters they do? It's up to me to find out.
