t solely biological aspects determine personality. I feel that social characteristics and behavior are taught and continue to develop throughout one's life. People are the product of their environment. That is, personality develops from the influences of one's interactions within their societal context.
             Social interests relates to how we are aware of other's attitudes and striving for a sense of belonging in society. From the Adlerian perspective social interest is taught, learned and used (Corey, 2002 p.111). The family system is our first teacher and as we get older friends, co-workers, and significant acquaintances will have a significant impact on the degree of our social interests. It is during adolescence that we begin to make decisions on our own that will impact our social interests. It is during this time that we start to create our own drives and needs. As parental influences may start to diminish, adolescents learn that the decisions that they make for themselves will affect every aspect of their life. Social interests can be expressed through shared activity and mutual respect (Corey, 2002, p.111).
             Humans also strive for a sense of belonging and significance. These are basic needs that one will strive for through out life. Significance means overcoming inferiority and striving for perfection or superiority. Adler feels (Corey, 2002, p.110) this is an innate characteristic. He contends that when we experience inferiority, the striving of superiority pulls us, meaning the goal of success will help us overcome obstacles in our lives. Also superiority doesn't mean being superior to others, but instead moving from a lower position to that of a higher position. Basically changing a weakness into a strength. Individuals have the ability to make decisions and choices to help them overcome any deficiencies. This striving helps one develop individuality.
