             Physicists do many different kinds of work. Physicists employed at universities will be required to prepare and give lectures. They will also be expected to direct the research of graduate students to carry on research of their own. Some of their time will be spent in the laboratory; some of it at their desks , often using a Computer, some of it reading, discussing, hinking and planning. Although they will probably work long hours, the freedom they will enjoy in planning their work will continue to make their lives rewarding.
             Physicists that are engaged in government research laboratories have much the same sort of life as university physicists, expect that they do no regular teaching. Although they belong to large organizations, they will have almost the same amount of freedom in arranging their own programs as their counterparts at university. If they are in juniour positions, they will be busy planning and carrying out experiments with technicians available to them. They will also spend time in calculations and in report writing. If they are in more senior positions, they may have more administrative and planning duties and are less intimately concerned with the actual details of experiments.
             The physicist in an industry works with engineers and other scientists in the development of new products. The special talent brings to the team by the physicist, is an understanding of fundamental ideas, while that brought by the engineer is an understanding of costs and technical know how. However, the relationship between the engineer and the physicist is often so close that neither will be sure which phase he or she is representing in the partnership.
