             Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez (More commonly known as Archbishop Oscar Romero) was one of the most influential voices in the fight for peace this century. Romero faced incredible opposition which he was able to overcome and used the Church as a light of hope to challenge his oppressors.
             On August 15, 1917, the world was blessed with a young boy named Oscar Arnulfo Romero(y Galdamez). He lived in Ciudad Barrios in San Miguel, El Salvador. At this time in history, his town was under great oppression. San Miguel was considered a National Security State(NSS). A NSS is a place where the military is accountable to none and the people are defenseless against tyranny and oppression(no peace). San Miguel was ravaged by poverty, injustice, and sorrow, which Romero dedicated his life to end. He brought hope and happiness to this poor, repressed country in a time where none existed.
             As a young boy Oscar was confused by the oppression of his country. He couldn't quite understand this predicament. He always knew that he wanted to make a change. This is why he entered the priesthood at a fairly early age. Romero worked his way up the religious ladder until he was appointed the Archbishop of El Salvador in 1977, at age sixty.
