             Working with a mandated client can be very trying for both the worker and the client. Firstly, the client is obligated to attend these sessions and does not really want to be there. This makes the workers job even harder to reach out and help a client who is being forced to receive help. Many problems arise as a result of this. It is the worker's job to properly give the client informed consent, but this is difficult to do with mandated clients and often, professional values are challenged and ethical concerns emerge.
             The main job of the worker while working with a mandated client is to ensure that the client is given informed consent, the knowledge that the worker wishes to intervene in the life of the client and the consent to do so (also includes telling clients about treatment alternatives). Along with this consent goes the long upstanding value of self-determination, the belief that the client can make their own decisions about their life. How can the worker believe in the self-determination of the client however, if they know that it was the client's self-determination and bad choices that got them into the situation they are in now? This value will be challenged because the worker may start to judge the client based upon their previous actions and choices, and unethically, not respect their autonomy.
             Another value that will be challenged is the worker's belief in the uniqueness and inherent dignity of the individual. It may be hard for a worker to respect the self worth of a client with three young children who is on probation for substance-abuse charges. Even more so, if the worker has her own children and thinks how ridiculous it is that a mother could possibly use drugs with three children to be raised. Nevertheless, the worker must try and maintain these values; The worker must view all mandated clients with self worth, empower them with choices, and distance themselves from the clients problem...
