Censorship

             In today's society, censorship is needed to protect the innocence of America's children. The amount of violence and profanity that can be seen and heard on television is higher than it has ever been. Video games have turned away from the fun-filled classics, such as Pac-man and Pong, and turned toward gruesome acts of violence. The radio waves are filled with profane language that was unspeakable twenty years ago. There is a desperate need for censorship in the media.
             In the last few years, the amount of sex and violence on television has dramatically increased. Advertisements revolve around the popular saying, "sex sells." The amount of skin that can be shown is ridiculous. A woman can be almost naked, and that is the "norm". There has also been an increase in the amount of violence shown on television. Ten years ago the average television show was a family sitcom. Today the average television show is filled with crime, hate, and guns. Since television has become a babysitter, these are the things children are most exposed to. Children are more influenced by television than they are by education. The National Center for Children Exposed to Violence has found that the typical American youth watches one thousand hours of television a year. This is more the nine hundred hours they will spend in a classroom. According to A.C. Husting, the average person will have viewed two hundred thousand acts of violence by the time they are eighteen years old. This desensitizes them from human emotion and gives them a distorted image of reality. Television violence alone is responsible for ten percent of all youth violence (www.nccev.org).
