The Road Not Taken – Robert Frost
             Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
             And looked down one as far as I could
             To where it bent in the undergrowth.
             Then took the other, as just as fair,
             And having perhaps the better claim,
             Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
             Though as for that the passing there
             Had worn them really about the same.
             In leaves no step had trodden black.
             Oh, I kept the first for another day!
             Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
             I doubted if I should ever come back.
             Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--

             Throughout The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost brings together many different literary techniques to express the theme of his poem. The general theme of the poem is the dilemma of making a choice, and the danger of not knowing where that decision will take you. In life, each and every one of us is on a journey to our own destination. Every-where that we go we will have to make decisions that will lead us to many different choices, and ultimately will determine our fate.
             "And sorry I could not travel both..." This phrase shows us that Frost thinks it is always hard to make important decisions because you are always going to wonder what might have happened if you had chosen the other path.
             The tone of the poem is very threatening. It is an extended metaphor. Frost's method of describing – metaphorically using the path in the woods – the several life-changing decisions we will have to make, gives the impression that a person would be better off staying an adolescent and being guided by a more knowledgeable adult.
