Eating Disorders

             A natural part of an adolescent's identity development is body image and self
             perception. When unhealthy thoughts and attitudes towards one's body develop
             it can lead to an eating disorder. Most people with eating disorders share certain
             -keep their feelings to themselves
             -tend to be perfectionists, good students, and excellent athletes
             Individuals with anorexia usually follow the wishes of other people, and have not
             yet learned how to cope with problems typical of adolescence, growing up, and
             becoming independent. They restrict their food intake to give them two things that
             they desperately crave, the first being control, and the second is the approval of
             People with bulimia and/or binge eating disorder typically consume huge amounts
             of food--often junk food-- to reduce stress and anxiety. However, with binge
             eating can come many negative side effects such as:
             -abuse of other risky behaviors such as alcohol or drug abuse
             One of the most effective measures that can be taken in preventing eating disorders
             is giving the developing teenager support and acceptance during the trying
