Hawaii, which later became a state, were able to actually increase in population, start a family and live in a rather normal community life.
The most significant experience that all Asians shared in the United States was Anti-Asian Laws. Although the United States claims to be a nation that welcomes all newcomers, the history of immigration, naturalization and equal opportunity and treatment reveals many differences. We have to point out that this fact was always changing in favor of one group and sometime in favor of others. There are points in United State's history where opinions about the Chinese waxed favorably and others where the Japanese were perceived favorably.
Lets first take a look at what these two groups have in common. In 1790, Congress limited the citizenship to only free white man. After almost a decade in 1870 after the civil war they added African Americans to the list. At the same time there was some movement to grant the citizenship to people of Asian descent, but politicians from western states rejected the idea.
