Analzying the movie Kids

I have chosen the movie Kids to analyze. I picked this film because of the important messages it relays to viewers. This is the first movie that has been able to realistically depict the lives of white urban youth. It is a real eye-opener for parents and a majority of the older generations. The film accomplishes its point through a number of different tactics including using urban actors and staying true to the everyday people depicted within it.
The producers of Kids used urban youth, unknown to Hollywood, for an important reason. Most of the featured individuals come from an urban life; a majority are pro skateboarders that grew up in New York City. The absence of silver-spoon fed actors adds a gritty, real life feel to the film. The accents and actions are real.
The underlying message behind this movie deals with the AIDS epidemic and its effect on America's youth from a sexual standpoint. A lot of parents in today's society are blind to the fact that kids are developing quicker and having sex earlier and earlier. Children are free to roam the streets doing whatever they please while their parents believe them to be out having innocent fun. The main character in Kids is an eighteen year old man going by "Telly" Telly's self-proclaimed purpose in life is to take young girls virginities, which he accomplishes twice in the one day that the movie is taking place.
Kids produced mixed reactions in the voices of our older generations. Many parents believed the film be provocative and insulting. What the movie really portrays is the truth, and a lot of parents would rather turn their backs than open their eyes to just that, the truth. I commend the filmmakers in this instance for what they have done for our society.
