Genetic Engineering and Modified Crops

ri Caudron illustrates how conventional crossbreeding has allowed for a peach that matures early; however, the downside to this was that the peach would split open on the tree. Thanks to technology scientists can identify the genes that caused the early splitting of the peach. With this they can select the genes they want to enhance, and create a peach that matures early and does not split (83). Genetic engineering has helped the peach and many other crops, doing basically the same thing as crossbreeding, just in a shorter amount of time.
Another type of research in biotechnology is transgenic. According to Julie Johnson, transgenic research is "transferring genes from one species to another." This type of research is the type of research looking to create custom-designed animals. These animals could potentially be used for food production, drug production, environmental cleanup, and disease models (18). These animals will help researchers in many ways. One example Julie Johnson offers is the "oncomouse." The creators of this little mouse inserted a gene that is related to cancer (19). These test mice will allow researchers to come more familiar with cancers and possibly lead one day to a cure.
Basically, there is nothing new about agricultural bioengineering. According to John Dyson, farmers have been crossbreeding crops for many years in order to produce crops with the more desired traits; however, bioengineering has allowed scientists to speed up the rate at which crossbreeding can be done (69). This technology allows us to improve the quality of the crops in just a short matter of time, allowing us to have better tasting foods with better nutritional value. The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) acknowledges that biotechnology "allows the exchange of genetic material between two parent plants to produce offspring having desired traits such as increased yields, disease resistance, and enhanced product qua...
