e self-awareness and self determination for the sake of getting the best out of society in what Indian people are suppose to receive.
>From a historical perspective, Indians are recent players in the educational, political and economic field. This modern adaptation does not however show any real growth for Indian people if measured up to mainstream society. The studies show that 75% of the Native American work force earns less than $7,000 per year. The national unemployment rate is currently at 4%, while the average unemployment rate for Indian people is around 45%. The education statistics show even more staggering numbers: 52% finish high school; 17% will attend college; 4% will graduate from college; 2% will attend graduate school (Meyers 1996). .
These statistics make it seem like Indian people of the present are not keeping up with the rest of society, and for the most part Indian people are not. Indian people have gone through endless stages of persecution, betrayal, scrutiny, prejudice, oppression, conflict, and disruption all throughout modern history. The dominant society operates to deny some individuals voice, and their awareness of their lack of voice convinces them either that they have none, or that they want no part of a system that seeks to silence them. Educational institutions, in particular, function to reproduce existing power relations by way of imposing definitions of knowledge that reaffirm the culture of the dominant (Tierney 1992). Today as Indian people of the present we have to some how find that same strength of determination or we will no longer keep the little bit of voice we have left in determining the solutions for our problems!
