In viewing the two videos on the famous African writer, Chinua Achebe, I learned about various beliefs, unbearable circumstances, and African traditions not consistently taught in many classrooms today. Chinua Achebe expressed many of his feelings and thoughts on the history of Africa, including religion, tradition, and the corruption brought to Africa by the early Europeans. Many of the points made by Chinua Achebe is expressed in his short stories and novels giving clear details on life in African villages and the many rituals practiced. One major point Achebe expressed in his interviews were the harsh and brutal treatment the Africans received by the Europeans. Missionaries came to Africa telling the villagers that their thoughts were evil, their religion was not real, and deprived them of their rights and self-expression. Achebe made the point that the missionaries assumed the villagers were taught democracy and that they gave up on education. The truth of the matt!
             er is, as expressed by Achebe, that many of the tribe-people, such as his own known as IGBO, had no model of democracy and no knowledge of the colonial system. The problem is many of the Europeans and missionaries did not understand the tribal ways and traditions and because of their ignorance, they decided to slander it.
             Chinua Achebe also expresses another valid point during his interview, concerning "story telling". Achebe says that story telling is a threat because the storyteller has a "different agenda". Chinua Achebe also emphasizes that importance of the storyteller saying that he (storyteller) takes over and makes history. The many stories told to him (Achebe) were of the heroism of the "good white man" fighting for the jungle.
