In the essay My Father by author Doris Lessing, Lessing writes I've written about my father before but it did not have to be true and writing this article for her she says would be difficult because it had to be true. She talks of him as being an officer in the 1914-18 war, handsome, dark standing tall young man. Then later at sixteen a photo of him shows a dark introspective youth but with the same intent in his eyes. Her father was very poor they made their own amusements. They would go to church three times on Sundays. The author's father had an older brother who was said to be too clever by half. He would turn out to be known as the "rich brother". Doris recalls that her father moved to Luton, she does not know why but this turns out to be the best part of his life that lasted a decade that ended in 1914 when he joined up as an ordinary soldier. Well the price dropped and they remained ther until her father was so ill they had to move closer to a hospital where he was bed ridden and remained there two years before he finally pasted away.
