Lord of The Flies

             Without society's rigid rules, anarchy and savagery can come to light. In William Golding's book Lord Of The Flies, it is shown that humans can be civilized for only so long when we are detached form civilization. In the beginning of this book they run the island a lot like a Democracy. The Conch shell symbolizes civilization and order. When they kill the pig they act like savages and show no mercy. Jack paints his face and it makes him a different person. Society holds everyone together, and without these conditions, our ideals, values, and the basics of right and wrong are lost.
             The boys are very organized at the beginning of the book with shelter and almost a setup government. Then they start to act more like a beast. There is still some shining of human when jack doesn't kill the pig and says, "Next time," (Golding 28) he also said that he couldn't get a good shot at the pig. He makes up excuses why he doesn't kill the pig but truly he was afraid. To get over his fear of the animal, Jack paints his face and uses this as a mask and shows no mercy the second time they go after the pig. Jacks aggression foreshadows the beast in him. The hunters gather around and start dancing and chanting.
             Jack begins to break off from Ralph's tribe and begins to hunt more than anything. Jack's tribe hunts down a Mother boar and kills it. They take its head and stick it on a stick in the ground. The killing of the mother pig shows the lack of feeling that Jack has for other living beings. Simon wanders off into the woods where the pig's head is; he begins to talk to it. The pigs head is then given the title the Lord Of The Flies. The
