The Cold War

             Should the US be Praised or Condemned fro Their Actions in the Cold War?
             "I don't know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
             The Cold War was nothing more than a fight of whose economy could produce the greatest amount of weapons of mass destruction the fastest. The contenders were the United States and Russia, the two main superpowers of the world. The war was fought not on the battlefield, but on the basis of fear. The fear was that Russia was going to begin a potentially world ending nuclear war. Both sides were prepared to reduce its enemy to ashes in seconds.
             The actions of the American government were in my opinion commendable. Our main concern was to make sure that no nation launched a nuclear strike. In 1962 the United States discovered that Russia was occupying Cuba with a number of nuclear missiles. The fear was that Russia was going to launch a nuclear attack on the United States. Upon Russia's discovery that the United States had been spying on their actions in Cuba, the tension started to rise. Soon both nations were stockpiling weapons of mass destruction as fast as they could. I think that the United States was wise in that they did not make any sort of military strike against Russia that could trigger a nuclear strike.
             The United States was taking the cautious road in their approach to Russia. Our message was clear and firm; we wanted Russia out of Cuba, now. This message conveyed our second most important priority, to halt the spread of Communism throughout the world. In the time to follow, an arms race developed that devoured almost all of our government's resources. The idea was to be superior to our Russian enemies if a nuclear war were ever to break out.
